Where Did You Get Your Pseudonym?

SandboxGeneral. What an odd sounding name, right? I wish I had a cool story to tell about how I came up with that name for an Internet handle. The truth is, I don’t always have such a creative mind and the reasoning behind it is rather simple.

I recall my first email address back in 1997, sub_120@yahoo.com. Go ahead, send an email to it because it probably won’t go anyplace. I abandoned it long ago. How I landed on sub_120 was even less creative than SandboxGeneral. While sitting at my computer which had Windows 95 on it I had a blank mind. It was my first computer ever and I bought it at a local computer shop in Twentynine Palms, California outside of my Marine Corps base. It had a program called Eudora Light and the icon of a mailbox. It was for email but I didn’t know how to use it. I’d open the program and couldn’t figure out how to do it. I knew nothing about computers then, absolutely nothing at all. After being stumped by the program I went on the Internet which is something I was able to figure out how to do. Yahoo! was the big game in town in those days and I was able to figure out how to register an account. When it wanted to know what name to use, I knew enough that I didn’t want to use my real name. But what should I use instead? I looked over to my left where I had a stereo setup with a Cerwin Vega powered subwoofer. The subwoofer’s model number was Sub-120 and that’s how I got my first email address.

Through the years I’ve had other handles that I no longer recall. But I know I had one that was related the the Marine Corps and had the number 556 which is the caliber of the rounds our M-16’s fired, 5.56mm. Corny, I know but I’m not all that creative.

Regarding SandboxGeneral, I came up with that name not because of anything to do with the Marine Corps, but it harkens to when I was a kid playing in the sandbox. My friends and I used to play in the sandbox a lot with little army guys and tanks where we would have fierce battles. Making up the sand in battlefields consisting of mountains, valley’s, and other terrain and obstacles was a good part of the fun. Each of us were our own general’s commanding our armies against the other. Those were the good old days, having fun and not caring about the things of the world at large.

One day I had to come up with a username for an Internet forum that no longer exists and I landed on SandboxGeneral based on those war fighting days as a kid. So there it is, that’s the origin story of SandboxGeneral.

What’s your story?

Hello world!

Hello world!

So this is my first post on my blog. I had a Facebook account last year for a while but it got to be too much for me to deal with. It was more of a bragbook because most people on there talk about what they’re doing every second of the day. That is annoying to me. In addition to that, I don’t like the privacy setup they use and in general, I had too much information about me online. Since then I have gone to great lengths to remove my name and information about me from the Internet where I can. You should Google yourself and see what kind of stuff there is online about you. You may be surprised.

I guess having this blog page will allow me to have an opinion on things in a manner where I control every aspect of what goes online while allowing a small degree of my mind and it’s thoughts to filter out to the world. I am a private citizen and I like to keep it that way.
